Radar Detector Myths
New Zealand’s most commonly misunderstood info regarding radar detectors
- Here in NZ, radar detectors are NOT illegal to own or use.
- (most) Radar detectors probably won’t give you enough warning on camera vans
- If you’re trying to get camera vans, expect a TON of false alerts.
- Radar detectors do not identify or detect police cars, ONLY radar.
- …not every police car has a radar fitted.
- ALL radar detectors pick up threats front, rear, and side. All are 360 degree, even if they don’t have arrows.
- Detectors facing the passenger seat (Uniden R7, R8, V1) still work just fine. You don’t need to see the dislay.
- Laser is very different to radar and it’s instant.
- Laser does not “bounce” off other cars or “wash past” other cars. Laser is precise.
- You will not react quicker than laser – police can lock your speed in less than half a second.
- A radar detector will work on your dash, or in your cup holder. Top of the window is better but not essential.
